The Only Lunch You Can Eat Standing Up
Every lunch format in this neighborhood has a failure mode. A hero comes apart at the far end. A bowl needs a table and both hands. A burger wants to be eaten immediately, sitting down, before it cools. Those are all fine trade-offs if you are staying put.
A wrap is the format that solves the other problem. It is closed on every side, the filling has nowhere to go, and you can hold it in one hand with a coffee in the other. That makes it the right order when lunch is happening somewhere other than a table, which down at the waterfront end of Bay Ridge is most of the time between April and November.
We are at 10 Bay Ridge Ave, a few minutes from Owls Head Park, the NYC Ferry landing, and the 69th Street Pier. There is a bench with a view of the Narrows within a five minute walk of our door in almost any direction. A wrap is what you carry to it.
What Is Actually on the Wrap Menu
The wrap options sit in two places on our menu, and it is worth knowing both, because most people only find the first one.
The Anytime
Grilled chicken, avocado, bacon, Swiss, lettuce, tomato and onion on a wrap. The name is accurate: it works at 11 AM and it works at 7 PM. The avocado is doing structural work as well as flavor work here, because it binds the filling together and means the wrap holds its shape without a heavy dressing. If you want one order that reads as a complete lunch rather than a snack, this is it.
Caesar Salad Wrap
A Caesar is a salad that was always halfway to being a wrap. Romaine has enough spine to stay crisp inside a wrapper for a while, the dressing coats rather than pools, and the whole thing is designed around a single assertive flavor. Rolled up, it becomes portable without losing much. This is the order for a hot afternoon when you want something cold and sharp instead of something warm.
Any Salad, Rolled
This is the part people miss. Our salad section is listed as any salad or wrap with grilled or crispy chicken, which means the salads were built to go either way from the start. If you have found a salad you like in our guide to salads in Bay Ridge, you can have the same thing as a wrap instead. That single line effectively doubles the wrap menu, and it is the reason to ask rather than to scan.
A wrap is not a sandwich with a different bread. It is a sealed container, which is a completely different set of possibilities.
Wrap, Hero, Croissant or Pita: The Same Filling, Four Lunches
Our chicken cutlet comes on a hero, a croissant or a pita with your choice of cheese, and several other things on the menu offer a similar choice. People treat this as a bread preference. It is closer to a decision about how and where you plan to eat.
- A wrap is the portable one. Sealed, one-handed, holds dressing, survives a walk and a bench. Lowest bread-to-filling ratio of the four.
- A hero is the sit-down one. More bread, more structure, and the filling stays in distinct layers so each bite tastes slightly different. It also comes apart if you carry it far, which is the honest trade.
- A croissant is the richest option and the most fragile. Butter in the pastry plus anything warm inside is excellent and also messy. Eat it on a plate.
- A pita is the middle ground: pocketed rather than rolled, so it is tidier than a hero and less committed than a wrap.
If you are specifically after the hero version of all this, our guide to chicken sandwiches in Bay Ridge and the one on the chopped cheese both go deeper on what happens when you put the same ingredients on a roll instead.
The Morning Version
A breakfast burrito is a wrap that has not admitted it yet, and ours exists for the same reason the lunch wraps do: you can carry it. On a weekday when you are catching the ferry or walking up the hill toward the R train, a sealed breakfast in one hand beats a plated one you have to sit down for. We open at 6 AM Monday through Friday, which is early enough to make that a real option rather than a theoretical one.
If you want the plated version of breakfast instead, our early morning coffee guide covers what the first hour down here actually looks like.
What to Drink With It
Wraps are usually cold or room temperature in the middle and lightly dressed, which gives you more latitude than a hot sandwich does. Our coffee is La Colombe and our tea is Rishi.
In warm weather, cold brew is the default pairing for a reason: low acidity, nothing competing with the dressing, and it stays drinkable for the length of a walk. An iced Rishi tea does the same job with less caffeine. In cooler weather a plain drip coffee or a black tea from the Rishi list is the better call, and if the wrap is a heavy one, something unsweetened is worth choosing deliberately. A fresh juice works if the wrap is vegetable-forward and starts to fight it if the wrap is full of bacon and cheese.
Where to Take It
The whole argument for a wrap is that it goes somewhere. A few that work:
- The 69th Street Pier. Five minutes, benches, and a straight view of the Narrows and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The best single destination for a wrap and a coffee.
- Owls Head Park. Up the hill, more shade, better if you want grass instead of water.
- The waterfront promenade. Eat while walking if you must, though we would sit.
- Your desk. If that is the plan, our list of cafes to work from in Bay Ridge makes the case for not going back.
For the wider version of a waterfront afternoon, things to do on the Bay Ridge waterfront and the waterfront walk guide are the ones to read. If you are driving down, parking and transit at the waterfront saves a lap around the block.
Wraps for a Group
Wraps are the most forgiving group order we make. They sit in a tray without collapsing, they can be cut in half so a platter covers twice as many people, and because they are sealed, nothing migrates in transit.
That makes them a good default for office lunches, meetings and team things. Our catering page is the place to start, catering for corporate events in Bay Ridge covers the logistics, and office breakfast ideas handles the morning. For anything on a timeline, calling (718) 777-6969 is faster than going back and forth online.
Delivery and Pickup
We deliver through GetSauce, and wraps travel better than almost anything else on the menu. The reason is simple: a wrap is closed. Steam cannot escape and ruin a crust it does not have, and dressing cannot soak into an open roll. Ten minutes in a bag costs a wrap much less than it costs a hero or anything griddled. Our full rundown of food and coffee delivery in Bay Ridge has the rest, including what does not travel well.
The Short Version
Order The Anytime if you want a full lunch in one hand. Order the Caesar Salad Wrap if you want something cold and sharp. Ask for any salad as a wrap if neither of those is quite it. Take a cold brew in warm weather and a drip coffee when it turns. Then walk five minutes to the pier and eat it looking at the water, which is the part a table cannot give you.
