When the Forecast Cancels the Waterfront
Bay Ridge is a neighborhood that sells itself on a clear day. The promenade along the harbor, the bridge in the distance, the ferry pulling away from the pier, a coffee in hand and nowhere particular to be. That is the postcard, and it is accurate for most of the year.
Then it rains. The sky over the Narrows goes the color of wet concrete, the forecast says the whole afternoon, and the plan that was built around being outside quietly falls apart. People tend to respond by cancelling the day entirely, which is a mistake, because a rainy day here is not a worse day. It is a different one, and in some ways a better one.
The waterfront does not close when it rains. It just empties out, which is a thing locals quietly look forward to.
The Case for Going Outside Anyway
Before writing off the outdoor version of the day, it is worth knowing what rain actually does to this stretch of Brooklyn.
The Promenade Empties Out
The paved waterside path through Shore Road Park is the busiest shared space in the neighborhood on a sunny weekend, with walkers, runners, cyclists and strollers all negotiating the same width of asphalt. Light rain clears most of that out within an hour. What is left is a wide, quiet, unobstructed path along the water, and the people who know that are usually the ones out on it. If you have ever walked the waterfront route on a crowded Saturday and wished for more room, a grey Tuesday is the version you were picturing.
The Light Over the Narrows Changes
Weather does something to the view here that clear skies do not. Low cloud sitting on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, container ships appearing and disappearing in the haze, the harbor turning flat and metallic. It is a less cheerful picture than the one on the postcard and a more interesting one. The same is true of the view from the higher ground in Owl's Head Park, where the hill gives you a vantage over all of it.
What to Make It Bearable
Three things decide whether a rainy walk is pleasant or miserable, and none of them is the amount of rain. Wind is the first, and the Narrows funnels it, so an umbrella is often worse than a hood. Footwear is the second, since the promenade holds puddles in a few predictable low spots. The third is having somewhere warm to end up, which is the part people forget to plan.
The Indoor Version of the Same Day
If the rain is steady rather than drifting, the honest answer is to move the whole day indoors and keep the waterfront as scenery rather than as the activity.
A Window Seat and a Long Morning
A cafe table on a wet day is one of the better deals in the city. Nobody is rushing you, the room is warmer than it is in July, and the street outside is doing something worth watching. Pier 69 Market sits at 10 Bay Ridge Ave, a couple of minutes from the water, and opens at 6 AM Monday through Friday and 7 AM on Saturday and Sunday, which means the quiet early stretch of a rainy morning is available long before the rest of the neighborhood is up. If you are planning to settle in for a few hours rather than twenty minutes, the guide to the best cafes to work from in Bay Ridge covers how to think about that.
Hot Drinks Do More Work in October
There is a reason the order changes with the weather. The same La Colombe coffee that goes out the door as cold brew all summer is doing something different when you are drinking it slowly out of the rain, and the Rishi tea selection gets a lot more attention in October than it does in July. If you are not sure what to order, the tea guide and the matcha and tea drinks guide are both worth a look, and the fall drinks guide covers what the season tends to bring out in people.
When You Do Not Want to Leave at All
Some rainy days are not negotiable. The wind is sideways, the forecast is red all afternoon, and the correct move is to stay home. Delivery runs through GetSauce, and the delivery guide explains how ordering actually works, including the practical difference between pickup and delivery when you only want coffee. Ordering ahead for pickup is also the move if you want the walk but not the wait: place the order, walk over, and be back out the door in under a minute.
A Rainy Day Plan That Holds Up
If you want a shape for the day rather than a list of options, this one works in almost any amount of rain:
- Early. Coffee at 6 or 7 AM, before the neighborhood is awake. Rainy mornings are the quietest hours of the week here.
- Mid-morning. The short version of the waterfront walk, out and back, while the rain is still light. Twenty minutes is enough.
- Late morning. Back indoors, dry off, second drink, stay a while. This is the part of the day the weather is actually giving you.
- Afternoon. Owl's Head Park if it lets up, the long way home if it does not.
- Evening. We are open until 9 PM every day, so a wet afternoon that turns into a wet evening does not need a new plan.
Somewhere Warm to End Up
La Colombe coffee and Rishi tea at 10 Bay Ridge Ave, open from 6 AM on weekdays and 7 AM on weekends. Order ahead for pickup, or have it delivered and skip the weather entirely.
Rain Changes the Crowd, Not the Hours
Worth knowing if you are planning around other people: bad weather thins out the waterfront long before it thins out the indoor seating. A rainy Saturday pushes everyone who would have been on the promenade into the places with a roof, so the middle of a wet weekend afternoon is often busier inside than a dry one. The inverse is also true. A rainy weekday morning is about as quiet as this neighborhood gets.
Our hours do not move with the forecast. Monday through Friday is 6 AM to 9 PM and the weekend is 7 AM to 9 PM, rain or not. If you are coming for something specific or bringing a group, a call to (718) 777-6969 is the fastest way to know what the room looks like before you get wet walking over.
Getting Here Without Getting Soaked
Rain changes the arithmetic of how you get to the waterfront. Street parking tends to be easier on a wet day because fewer people are coming down for the view, which is one of the few times circling is not part of the plan. The parking and transit guide covers where to aim for. If you were counting on the NYC Ferry, check the app before you leave, since marine conditions can affect service in ways a subway is never affected, and the walk from the pier is short but fully exposed.
Coming from further out, the R train and the buses are the dry options, and the walk down to the water from the avenue is a few minutes. That is a short enough distance that the weather is an inconvenience rather than a reason to stay home.
